How can I liven up my holiday dinner party?

Add Some Southern Flair to Your Holiday Dinner Party

Being the hostess with the mostess can be tough job! If you don't want to host a holiday dinner that is likely to be ho-hum, why not throw in a little Southern flair that is sure to create a buzz?! Instead of a sit-down dinner, plan out a rich, culinary buffet inspired by Southern Christmas traditions.

Place a large table (or the dining room table) in the main entertaining room. This arrangement will look best if placed in front of the hearth but, if you don't have a fireplace, set it up off to the side of the room, away from the center area.

Next, place twin LED artificial prelit trees behind the table, close to the wall (if you have a fireplace, set them up on either side of it). Conveniently, you won't have to apply lights or worry about pesky needles falling into your food spread. You should, however, add simple silver balls and icicles to increase the sparkling effect the trees will create. Cover the table with a nice tablecloth and use holiday flower displays or decorative bowls filled with ornaments as centerpieces. Finally, spread the food out buffet style.

Here are some traditional Southern holiday dishes to put out:

  • Pineapple-glazed ham
  • Sweet potato custard
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Green bean casserole with onions
  • Collard greens
  • Pear and apple ambrosia salad
  • Buttermilk biscuits
  • Pecan pie
